THE SMITH BROTHERS

Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, Tony Dean Smith & Ryan W. Smith are the Smith Brothers, a creative partnership forged in the fires of sibling revery.  The brothers moved to Vancouver, Canada in 1990, where their childhood collaboration began, making short films that Tony would direct, with Ryan acting. As their love-affair with filmmaking developed, they combined their talents to write various short films, television concepts and features films.  This led to each of them working as professionals in the film and television industry for the past decade.

Tony Dean Smith is an award-winning director/writer/editor, whose Director’s Guild of Canada 35mm short film, Reflection, played in numerous festivals, taking home a first prize award and earning five Leo Award nominations (including best picture and director).  Tony’s directing credits include the comedy series Health Nutz, three episodes of CTV’s Robson Arms, co-directing Summerhood, and numerous visually rich music videos and short films.  He is also an acclaimed editor, having cut for Neill Blomkamp, 20th Century Fox, Universal Studios, NBC, Syfy, Hallmark and others.

Ryan W. Smith is an award-winning writer/producer, having placed as a Semifinalist in the 2016 Austin Film Festival‘s Screenplay Competition for his feature script, Jacaranda.  Along with his film work, Ryan has written on over 135 episodes of television (Reboot: The Guardian Code, Mr. Young, Some Assembly Required), which has earned him two Leo Awards.  Ryan is a graduate of York University’s MFA program. His writing has played in numerous film festivals and been featured on networks such as Netflix, SyFy, Disney and YTV.

Together, Tony and Ryan are the recipients of the Super Channel Super Catalyst Screenwriting Award for their supernatural adventure feature, The Sensational.

The Smith Brothers live in Vancouver, B.C., where they continue to be not only creative partners, but brothers.
